Detective Morgenstern walked up to Sam. “Saw the look on your partner’s face,” he said. “Let me guess. She doesn’t think the kid did it, right?”

Sam shrugged. “Well, at least she got the girl to talk to her. She claims she was asleep on the couch and woke up to find her stepdad already dead. Karen thinks she might have been drugged or something, she’s having that checked at the hospital.”

Morgenstern shook his head and laughed sarcastically. “So I guess the girl just snoozed through it while some raving maniac came in and beat her daddy to death? Did I mention there are no signs of forced entry anywhere on the house?”

“No, but I’m glad you mentioned that. The girl says her boyfriend was here earlier, kid named Joey Throckmorton who lives down the street. As far as she knew, he went home about the time she dozed off. I’m going to head down there and talk to him, you want to come along?”

The detective grunted. “You damn Skippy,” he said. “But unless this kid can tell us something concrete, I’m going to recommend murder charges against the girl.”

“Fair enough,” Sam said. “Let’s just go see what the boy has to say, shall we?”

The Throckmorton house was only half a block away, so the two detectives walked down the sidewalk. Morgenstern hung back at the bottom of the stairs while Sam rang the doorbell. He rang it twice before they heard any sounds inside the house, and then a bleary-eyed man opened the door the length of the safety chain and peered out at them.

Sam held up his ID. “Detective Sam Prichard, Denver PD. We’re looking for Joey Throckmorton.”

The man’s eyes suddenly seemed more awake. “Joey? Has he done something?”

Sam smiled. “Actually, we just need to speak with him for a few minutes about his visit earlier to his girlfriend’s house. Is he home?”

The man just looked at him for a moment, then pushed the door shut and took off the safety chain before opening it wide. “Yeah, he’s upstairs asleep. Come on in and I’ll go get him.”

Sam and Wendell stepped inside and waited in the foyer as the man went up the stairs. It was about two minutes later when he returned, a sleepy teenager following him.

“Joey Throckmorton?” Sam asked. When the boy nodded, Sam and Wendell held out their ID wallets. “We’re Detectives Sam Prichard and Wendell Morgenstern, with the Denver Police Department. Were you down at your girlfriend Stephanie’s house earlier tonight?”

The boy’s eyes were wide as he looked at his father before turning them back to Sam. “Yeah,” he said. “Is something wrong?”

“You could say that,” Wendell said. “Looks like somebody killed her stepdad during the night. You see anything like that?”

Joey’s eyes suddenly did their best impression of dinner plates and his mouth fell open. “Oh, my God, George? Are you serious?”

“I’m afraid so,” Sam said, giving Wendell a nasty look. “Did you see or hear anything unusual there tonight?”

The boy started to shake his head, but then stopped and looked at Sam hard.
